Bali’s Airport needs expansion

He inspected the airportlast week when he opened the PATA Travel Mart which Balihosted. Following that inspection Kalla called on PT Angkasa Pura – the companycharged with managing the airport – to extend and expand the current runway.
Bali Update(balidiscovery.com) quoted Kalla as saying that the expansion would cost US$161Million and take up to two years.
Kalla told the Bali Post:”The Ngurah Rai airport must soon be expanded. In the first phase, therunway must be extended 600 metres. In the second phase, a new runway must beconstructed.”
The Vice President calledfor an urgent construction programme to be undertaken that will allow Bali to welcome the larger, A380 aircraft within twoyears’ time.
Kalla added that to handle growing passenger levels, Balimust build a new domestic terminal and expand the current internationalterminal. Funding, according to the VP, should come from domestic sources andnational banks.
Following the VP’s visit, Bali’s Governor MadeBeratha joined the chorus calling for the airport’s expansion, changing hisearlier position opposing Ngurah Rai’s expansion, the report said.
Beratha was quoted tellingthe Indonesian language Nusa Bali that the land needed for the expansion wasalready available. Beratha dismissed plans to build a new airport in West Bali, insisting a new airport is not needed as longas the current airport can be expanded.
