The online campaign to find the world’s best cities was whittled down to a shortlist of 21 last week, with several Asian cities still in the running.
The 21 finalists of the New7Wonders Cities campaign include the cities of Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, plus other Asia Pacific hubs including Mumbai, Perth, Seoul, Shenzhen and Vigan – a somewhat surprising entry for the Philippines.
This means that Asia Pacific has the most finalists of any region, ahead of the Americas (six), Europe (five), Middle East (two) and Africa (one). Only 10 of the 21 remaining cities are national capitals.
The 21 finalists are (in alphabetical order): Bangkok, Barcelona, Beirut, Chicago, Doha, Durban, Havana, Istanbul, Kuala Lumpur, La Paz, London, Mendoza, Mexico City, Mumbai, Perth, Quito, Reykjavik, St Petersburg, Seoul, Shenzhen and Vigan.
Bernard Weber, founder and president of New7Wonders, said the diversity of cities in the final 21 is “remarkable in terms of regional geography and urban culture.”
The 21 cities were decided by a public vote, both via phone and on the New7Wonders website. The voting will now continue until the final list of seven world cities is revealed on 7 December 2014.
