“We are optimistic about this sincewe have met all the requirements, not to mention the support from othercountries,” I Gusti Nyoman Widja, Director of Traditions at the Tourism andCulture Ministry, was quoted saying in an Antara report.
Widja hadsaid UNESCO recognition would enhance the image of batik as well of Indonesiaas its country of origin. Then, he wasquoted saying, UNESCO would provide funds for its preservation and it would alsobe safe from other countries’ claims.
According to Widja, the Indonesian government had submitted its proposal to recognisebatik as a world heritage product to UNESCO in September 2008. The processthereafter went well as there were no objections from countries such as Brunei or Malaysia.
Batik wouldbe the third cultural product from Indonesia named a World IntangibleHeritage after the Wayang (traditional puppets used in narration-supportedshadow plays) and the Keris (ceremonial dagger).
