The global population of birds is in serious trouble, with several species in decline, according to a report from conservation group Birdlife International.
The New Zealand Herald has reported that species such as the European turtle dove, Indian vultures, African eagles and albatrosses of the Southern Oceans are all showing decreasing numbers. The report points the finger at a “rapid deterioration in the global environment”.
“Birds provide an accurate and easy-to-read environmental barometer, allowing us to see clearly the pressures our current way of life are putting on the world’s biodiversity,” said Dr Mike Rands, BirdLife’s Chief Executive.
