In an interesting development, watched with keen interest by the scientific community, two blue whales, the largest mammals on earth, were spotted recently off the Mangalore coast during a survey by the Kochi-based Central Marine Fisheries Reserach Institute. Blue whales are generally not sighted in the Arabian Sea, and found off Sri Lankan deep waters. Following this spotting, the institute plans to increase its observation. The discovery would add weight to India’s status as a leading destination for wildlife tourism.
