Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) have put forward a motion regarding the potential impact on Anglo-Scottish air services and wider economy, following suggestions from bmi that it will withdraw its Glasgow Airport services. Members of the Scottish Passenger Agents’ Association (SPAA) Council joined with bmi CEO Wolfgang Prock-Schauer to brief MSPs on the potential impact of Heathrow Airport Limited’s proposed increase in domestic passenger charges, which could in turn see bmi withdraw its domestic routes to regional airports. Prock-Schauer’s asserted that any further potential increase in the airline’s already critical level of Glasgow-London direct operating costs could be the catalyst for a partial or complete withdrawal. A Parliamentary Motion by Charlie Gordon MSP, and a series of Parliamentary Questions by Jamie McGrigor MSP, have now been raised. “Scotland’s economy needs these routes,” said SPAA President Brian Pott, “in an environment in which the mooted high-speed rail links between Scotland, London and Europe via the Channel Tunnel are still many years away - even if they are eventually commissioned by the UK Government. Scotland’s business and leisure travellers need and deserve to have a real choice when planning their travel to and through London - one that will no longer exist on the Glasgow-Heathrow route, should BMI be forced to downsize or withdraw its service.”
