The first Boeing 787 Dreamliner rolled out of the paint hangar on Saturday. The aircraft, which will be delivered to Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA), features a special 787 livery.
“Our teams are making outstanding progress in completing the first airplane to be delivered and achieving certification of the 787,” said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program. “We are inspired by the airline’s enthusiasm for this airplane and look forward to the day when we make our first delivery to ANA.”
ANA’s first 787 will be laid out with two cabins – economy and business – and will be put into service in September, flying a special charter flight between Tokyo and Hong Kong before commencing a regular domestic schedule. Typically the 787 will hold between 240 and 290 passengers.
“ANA’s passengers will be the first to experience the 787 Dreamliner’s comfortable interior environment,” said Mitsuo Morimoto, ANA senior executive vice president and member of the board of directors. “Combined with ANA’s superior levels of service, passengers will enjoy a spacious interior, larger windows, comfortable seats and touch-panel in-flight entertainment screens.”
The new Dreamliner promises several innovations, including a special air conditioning system that offers cleaner cabin air and higher humidity.
The launch of the Dreamliner will be a relief to both Boeing and its customers. The new aircraft model is already more than four years behind schedule, having been hit by a series of delays. Despite this, the Dreamliner remains the fastest-selling commercial aircraft in history, having racked up 827 orders to date, including 24 for British Airways and 15 for Virgin Atlantic.
