The development of Boeing‘s 777-X has reached a major milestone, with the completion of the main design configuration for the new long-haul aircraft.
Designed as a new fuel-efficient successor to the popular 777 series, the new 777-X will feature two versions, the 777-8 and 777-9. Boeing has now finalised the design of the first version, the 777-9, which is expected to enter production in 2017.
“The programme is right where we want it to be,” said Bob Feldmann, vice president & general manager of the 777-X programme. “We have an airplane and production system that are on track and on schedule, and we remain laser focused on meeting our commitments to our customers.”
Boeing claims that the 777-X aircraft will offer “significant range, payload and fuel burn advantages” compared to Airbus‘ rival model, the A350. The 777-9 version will be the largest two-engined commercial aircraft in the world, carrying up to 425 passengers depending on the seating layout.
To-date, Boeing has received orders for 320 777-X aircraft, the majority of which are for the larger version. Customers include Lufthansa, Etihad, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Qatar Airways and ANA.
