Bombardier has unveiled the new trams it intends to use on the new Gold Coast Light Rail system.
The Bombardier Flexity 2 trams will be deployed on the city’s GoldLinQ network, which will open in 2014, stretching 13km down the Queensland coast from Gold Coast University Hospital to Broadbeach, via Surfers Paradise.
The trams are each 43.4 metres long and will be adorned with the blue and gold colours of the Gold Coast. They will be air-conditioned, and will become the first trams in the world designed to carry surf boards on specially-designed racks.
In the first phase, the line will be serviced by a fleet of 14 seven-car trams, which will be delivered over the next four months. A further six trams will be delivered by early 2014, with passenger services expected to commence from mid-2014. The GoldLinQ system will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is expected to handle up to 10,000 people per hour. In future, the network is expected to be extended to Gold Coast airport and venues hosting events during the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
More than 4,000 Bombardier trams and light rail vehicles are currently in service across more than 75 cities in Europe, Australia and North America.
