Virgin Atlantic Airways President Richard Branson has written to both US US presidential candidate Barack Obama complaining about the proposed merger between British Airways (BA) and American Airlines (AA), CNN has reported. Branson wrote that such an alliance would severely damage competition on trans-Atlantic routes.
Releasing excerpts of the letter in an interview with BBC radio, Branson said; “Just because life is tough out there, you shouldn’t rid yourself of competition.” He went on to say that the merger would result in higher prices and job losses on both sides of the Atlantic, and that the move was “very dangerous”.
The letter was also sent to Republican presidential candidate John McCain. BA said last week that it expected a preliminary deal with AA to be completed within weeks. An application to US regulators would be filed shortly afterward, it added.
