A British woman was part of a two-person team that recently completed the first ever commercial crossing of Nepal’s Great Himalaya Trail. Toni Wilson and her partner, Australian Greg Babbage, walked for 157 days, climbed almost 20 5,000-metre passes, faced severe blizzards and searing heat as they trekked from Kanchenjunga in the far east of Nepal to Humla in the far west, in a single expedition.
The history-making trek was undertaken with adventure travel company World Expeditions, which offers the expedition as part of its commercial package – usually broken down into seven different stages. Ms Wilson and Mr Babbage were however, the first people to walk it in its entirety, in a single season. During their trip, the pair was joined by approximately 40 others at various stages, while each stage was led by an experienced mountaineer.
Sue Badyari CEO of World Expeditions said the itinerary was a means of bringing much-need tourist income to some of the world’s poorest communities.
“If there is a way that we can break the poverty cycle for communities along the Great Himalaya Trail who see no benefit from tourism currently and who are largely farming subsistent, then the Great Himalaya Trail can only be a positive thing. Our aim is to generate as much awareness for the trail to ensure that this happens,” she said.
