Brits choosing to swap scarves and gloves for bikinis and bellinis on Christmas Day
Temperatures set to soar for 47% of Brits* booking to escape the cold this festive season
Record numbers of Brits are fleeing the UK in a bid to spice up Christmas Day 2009 and get over a gloomy year. The tradition of sipping mulled wine around the fire after a cold winter’s walk is a thing of the past, according to new travel site, Hotelly.com.
Latest stats from the price comparison site show that sun-seekers are racing to book last-minute holidays to exotic and inspirational destinations including India, the Canary Islands and Egypt in a bid to end the tough year on a high.
“It seems like people have had enough of the weather and constant gloomy economic reports so want something to finally look forward to,” said Vishal Jain, Director at Hotelly.com. “We’ve witnessed a sudden surge in bookings for Christmas week. The destinations of choice suggest that Brits would rather be on a cultural adventure or having a BBQ on the beach than staying home for a traditional Christmas. We expect to see this trend take off even further in December when more disgruntled office workers finally have enough and decide to escape.”
“There are some really good value deals going to these warmer climates so it’s no real surprise,” he added.
According to Hotelly.com, the top five Christmas Day destinations being booked in November are:
1. Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt
2. Tenerife, Canary Islands
3. Goa, India
4. Lanzarote, Canary Islands
5. Gran Canaria, Canary Islands
