British holidaymakers are lagging behind other European nations when it comes at looking for holiday bargains, a new index has said.
The Expedia Holiday Spend Index has found the Asian and Latin America markets are best at hunting our for a deal and that while 55% of Brits say they cannot afford a holiday many are missing out by not paying attention to packages and sales.
The online travel agent’s index said only 40% of Brits search for seasonal sales before booking a trip and only 11% are subscribed to newsletter deals.
Costs in-resort are also affecting budgets with only 22% booking attractions in advance and only 16% booking hotels with free WiFi.
More than half (52%) of Brits in the survey told Expedia they save for their entire holiday in advance but a great deal of spend before the flight even takes off with airport food and drinks, duty free, clothes shopping and magazines.
Expedia.co.uk managing director Andy Washington said: “With rapidly changing prices, finding the best deal can be a complex process and this study shows that Brits aren’t always sure how to go about this.”
The study also found airlines charging passengers for baggage and seat selection are among the most annoying expenses.
Around 36% of travellers dislike having to pay extra for baggage, while 27% baulk at the idea of paying for seat selection. Taxes (41%) were the most unpopular charge among travellers, while booking fees (34%) and resort/hotel fees (25%) also ranked highly.
