The China Airlines (CAL) Group has announced that CAL and Mandarin Airlines have launched codesharing cooperation with China Eastern Airlines and its subsidiary Shanghai Airlines. Through codesharing, CAL and China Eastern will jointly operate flight services between Taiwan and mainland China. The CAL Group presently operates 76 flights to 16 different destinations in mainland China every week. China Eastern is the third major mainland Chinese civil airline to codeshare with CAL, following China Southern Airlines and Xiamen Airlines, and is also one of mainland China’s three largest carriers. Following the launch of codeshare cooperation, passengers flying to destinations on both sides of the Taiwan Strait on CAL, Mandarin Airlines, China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines will enjoy even more convenient flight choices and itinerary options.
This codesharing cooperation includes flights between Taoyuan International Airport and Shanghai-Pudong, Xi’an, Qingdao, Nanjing and Ningbo, as well as between Taipei-Songshan and Shanghai-Hongqiao. These routes are presently served by 26 weekly round-trip flights operated by the CAL Group, as well as 30 weekly round-trip flights operated by China Eastern Airlines and another six weekly round-trip flights operated by Shanghai Airlines. Following the recent launch of codeshare cooperation between the CAL Group and China Southern Airlines and Xiamen Airlines, CAL had increased its weekly round-trip cross-strait flights to 31. Now that codesharing has been launched with China Eastern, the weekly total has been increased to 36 round-trip flights, providing cross-strait passengers more convenient service and substantial benefits.
CAL and China Eastern are both in the process of joining the SkyTeam Alliance following their respective signing of Adherance Agreements with the alliance in September and June and 2010, and the two carriers had already signed a Strategic Cooperation Framework Agreement with each other in 2010. This year’s launch of codesharing cooperation substantially strengthens the cooperative relationship between the two airlines, enabling them to expand their flight networks and boost their share of the cross-strait aviation market by capitalizing on China Eastern’s Shanghai hub and extensive route network within mainland China.
In addition to China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines, the CAL Group also operates codesharing cooperation with ten major airlines around the world including Delta Air Lines, Alitalia, Garuda Indonesia, Thai Airways, Vietnam Airlines, Korean Air, Czech Airlines, Japan Airlines, China Southern Airlines and Xiamen Airlines, as well as the Deutsche Bahn German Rail System. The CAL Group is presently in discussions with many other carriers with the objective of forming cooperative relationships.
