California has introduced a bill which may lead to a ban on the sale of shark fins. With a large Asian community, the US state is one of the largest sources of demand for shark fins outside China. Every year fins from up to 73 million sharks are used for shark fin soup, while the bodies of the animals are dumped overboard. The practice has been cited as major reason why one third of shark species are currently threatened with extinction. Despite this, there is currently no law in the US to stop finned sharks from ending up in restaurants.
“Sharks have been around for nearly 400 million years, but at the current rate of overfishing they could be wiped out in a single human generation,” said Peter Knights, Director of San Francisco-based WildAid.
