Wildlife officials in Cambodia are using cash incentives to encourage Mekong residents in the country’s northeast to protect nesting grounds of soft-shell turtles, according to a Phnom Penh Post report. The creatures are so threatened they were believed extinct two years ago. Conservation International (CI) said locals are instructed how to protect nests it from natural predators.
“US$30 for finding the nest, plus US$2 a day from the time we see the nest until it hatches, plus US$2 per hatched egg,” CI’s Kim Chamnan told the newspaper. Nests typically hold 20 to 50 eggs.
