Cambodia is planning to launch its new national carrier, Cambodia Angkor Airline (CAA), on 27 July, at the same time as inaugurating the newly renamed Preah Sihanouk International Airport in the southern resort town of Sihanoukville. The Phnom Penh Post reported Mao Havannal, Cambodia’s Secretary of State for Civil Aviation, as saying that the airline would initially launch services between the Sihanoukville hub - formerly Kang Keng Airport - and Siem Reap, using a fleet of two ATR-72 aircraft.
“On inauguration day, only the national air route by the newly established airline will fly,” Havannal said, adding that the airline was a joint venture between the Cambodian government and Vietnam Airlines.
Travel agencies have reported professed to being in the dark about the new airline and no agencies have thus far confirmed any ticket bookings by tourists. Ho Vandy, head of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents, said that he had received any official news concerning upcoming flights with CAA. The Siem Reap-Sihanoukville route has not been served since a PMT Air flight crashed en route to the resort town in 2007, killing all 22 people on board.
