Cathay Pacific Airways has celebrated the launch of services to Chennai, marking the latest in a series of forays into the Indian market. With the addition of its four weekly services to the South India hub, the Hong Kong-based carrier now has 28 flights per week to the country.
The airline’s Chief Operating Officer, John Slosar, officiated at the celebrations for the launch of Chennai flights, attended by more than 300 guests including Dinesh Kumar, Airport Director for the Airport Authority of India, and Adit Atal, Vice President, Spencers Travel Services Ltd.
“We (Cathay and sister airline Dragonair) now have 35 passenger flights a week (to India), opening up new horizons for the travelling public.” Slosar said at the launch. “That all adds up to a very significant presence in India, which is important for our company and also for Hong Kong,” he added.
Cathay and Dragonair’s expansion in India follows the signing of an air services agreement between the Hong Kong and Indian governments in December last year. Cathay now operates 14 flights a week to Delhi, 10 to Mumbai and four to Chennai. In addition Dragonair recently launched a daily service to Bengaluru (Bangalore).
