Almost exactly a year ago Outrigger Resorts, the Hawaiian hospitality company with 68 years of history, announced a new resort strategy for Asia and the Indian Ocean.
The vision was to create a portfolio of high-end resorts in absolute beachfront locations, guaranteeing its guests direct access to some of the world’s most idyllic stretches of sand.
One of the founding members of this beachfront portfolio was the Outrigger Laguna Phuket Beach Resort – an expansive Thai resort that opens out onto the soft golden sands of Bangtao Beach, one of the many crescent-shaped, palm-fringed bays that comprise Phuket’s Andaman Coast.
Part of Laguna Phuket, a 400-hectare complex of lagoons, upscale resorts, villas and golf courses, the Outrigger is an ideal destination for families. In this self-contained leisure paradise, parents can turn their children loose without worrying about traffic or any of Phuket’s other minor perils.
Instead, guests are provided with a plethora of families-friendly activities, including an inviting lagoon-style swimming pool, complete with a twisting water slide and children’s pool, plus a kids’ club, dive centre, gym and tennis, squash and badminton courts.
Like the resort itself, the Outrigger’s rooms are bright and spacious. Ranging from 43-156m², all rooms feature private balconies with lagoon or sea views and can accommodate at least three guests, making them perfect for families. There is also a selection of suites that open out directly onto the beach and a two-bedroom villa that can house up six guests.
And for that extra level of exclusivity, guests staying in the resort’s club rooms, suites and villa can now access The Club – an elegant thatched lounge complex perched over the lagoon that serves all-day drinks, afternoon snacks and evening wine and hors d’ oeuvres.
For more hearty meals, Outrigger serves up an evenly-spread menu of Asian and international dishes at Locavore (named after the food movement that promotes locally-sourced ingredients), and Edgewater, the al fresco beachfront outlet. In addition, Metzo’s Bistro, which relaunched in late September after a major refurbishment, specialises in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine under the expert guidance of acclaimed Lebanese chef, Mustapha Haj Omar.
Alternatively, guests can choose to dine at any of the other resorts in the Laguna complex and charge it back to their account at the Outrigger. These other resorts are all easily accessible, either by complimentary shuttle bus or, more charmingly, by boat across the lagoon.
And this is the beauty of Laguna Phuket; it is a truly integrated resort, combining the facilities of multiple resorts in one self-contained, family-friendly complex.
This is an appealing prospect for leisure travellers. And combined with the new Outrigger brand promise of offering resorts in absolute beachfront locations, guests booking the Outrigger Laguna Phuket Beach Resort can rest assured that they will be staying at an ideal tropical resort destination.
While the Outrigger Resorts brand is now expanding across Asia and the Indian Ocean, including a recently-opened property in the Maldives, Outrigger Laguna Phuket Beach Resort is still setting the standards to which other Asian resorts can only aspire.
