The Chicago Office of Tourism has joined mobile application FourSquare to promote the city’s neighbourhoods, restaurants and attractions. The location based, social networking application allows users to ‘check-in’ at over 60 locations around the city to win Chicago-themed ‘badges’. Each badge celebrates a Chicago tradition including its music history, love of hot-dogs and well-known movie locations.Dorothy Coyle, Director of the Chicago Office of Tourism said: “Foursquare provides a great incentive for people to explore the City’s diverse neighbourhoods by playing a fun and interactive game. We’re excited to be pioneering this innovative service.”Tristan Walker, Head of Business Development at Foursquare added: “By partnering with a city entity, we’re offering Foursquare players a new angle on discovering the city around them. Adding these Chicago-specific badges encourages users to try out new businesses and promote lesser-known landmarks.”After following Explore Chicago at foursquare.com/explorechicago, game players can earn the badges by visiting particular attractions and sites. The ‘On Location’ badge can be earned by visiting locations from movies such as The Blues Brothers, The Dark Knight, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and High Fidelity. Visitors can gain the ‘Celery Salt’ badge for visiting notable Chicago-style hot-dog establishments and music fans can obtain the ‘Chicago Blues’ badge for stopping at iconic landmarks and clubs.Foursquare is free to download and accessible on internet-connected devices. Explore Chicago has posted a list of the required locations to give gamers a head start. Visit explorechicago.org/games for more information.
