China Eastern, Shanghai edge closer to merger

China Eastern Airlines has taken another step towards a merger with Shanghai Airlines after it won regulatory approval to raise CNY7 billion (US$1 billion) through share placement. The cash injection will help cut the carrier’s debt-to-asset ratio, seen as a prerequisite for their merger.
