A record 2.3 billion passenger trips will be taken on the mainland during the upcoming Lunar New Year period, the China Daily has reported.
A record 188 million people will take to the nation’s rail system and another 24 million will make holiday flights during January and February, in what the South China Morning Post has reported as the world’s biggest annual migration.
Earlier this year, the chaos was compounded by freak winter ice storms that spread misery across large parts of the country. The official Chinese New Year holiday for 2009 falls on 26 January, earlier than most years.
