Pressure is mounting on the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) from lobby groups around the world. Chinese authorities have lent their voice to criticisms of the scheme, with the Chinese Airline Association and China Air Transport Association (CATA) calling for a suspension of next year’s deadline, at which point aviation companies will be subject to the carbon tax.
Chai Haibo, Vice President of CATA, has dubbed the ruling “unreasonable and illegal”, adding weight to the argument that such a tax will weaken Europe’s fragile growth. He added that inflicting extra costs on air passengers will only deter Chinese tourists from visiting the region and could prompt retaliatory measures. China, along with the US, is seeking exemption from the system reports the businessGreen Blog.
