China is planning an ambitions ocean exploration programme that may send scientists to 7,000m under the ocean’s surface for the first time in the world. Xinhua reported Sun Zhihui, Director of the State Oceanic Administration, saying that a deep-sea manned submersible for the mission has been assembled last year and that testing would begin this year.
To date, manned submersibles have only descended to a depth of 6,500m. The average depth of the world’s oceans is about 3,790m, the report stated.
