Authorities in China’s northern Shaanxi province have launched a huge project to relocate 392,000 people from mountainous areas. The China Daily has reported that the CNY14 billion (US$2.1 billion) project was prompted by concerns for people living in the remote rural communities of northern Shaanxi, who don’t have access to clean water supplies. It will take up to 10 years to complete the relocation project, which will see residents of up to 90 communities moved to nearby villages or cities.
