China to build airport in desert

Authorities in China are planning to develop a new airport in the Taklimakan Desert, in the far western region of Xinjiang. To be built by 2015, the new hub will be the first airport built in the desert in China, the Beijing Daily reported. The airport is expected to benefit oil exploration and rescue work in the desert. Four new airports are planned for the Xinjiang region between 2011 and 2015.
