Beijing Capital Airport is already close to full capacity
China is planning to build the world’s biggest airport in Beijing, serving the capital and the surrounding regions of Tianjin and Hebei. Current facilities are already running close to capacity and there is little or no room for expansion reports The Telegraph. Consequently city planers have identified a 54km2 site, almost the size of Bermuda, to the south of the city in the suburb of Daxing.
Wang Jian, Secretary General of the China Civil Airport Association, approves of the site which has few residents and potential space for nine runways. It will also be connected to city transport links through a Metro extension and high-speed rail services.
When Beijing Daxing International opens in 2015, it will process an estimated 370,000 passengers per day, making it the world’s busiest airport, ahead of Atlanta in the US which currently serves approximately 240,000 passengers per day.
These plans clearly demonstrate the expected growth within the Chinese aviation market. Terminal 3 at Beijing Capital Airport was completed three years ago, boasting an area five times larger than Heathrow’s five terminal combined. The facility is nearly operating at full stretch already, processing 200,000 passengers per day of a possible 206,000, making it the second busiest airport in the world.
