China-US launch airport environmental agreement

The US Trade and Development Agency(USTDA), American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE), and the CivilAviation Authority of China (CAAC) have launched an initiative designed to curbthe environmental impact of airports.
The Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation hasreported that the Airport Environmental Partnership (AEP) was agreed during therecent 2009 US-China Aviation Symposium in Beijing.
The AEP will seek to exchange best practices and common approaches tomitigating environmental impacts of airport development and management. SeveralUS airports and authoritieswill participate, including the world’s largest cargo hub, Hartsfield-Jackson AtlantaInternational Airport,as well as Chicago O’Hare International Airport, and the Port Authority of NewYork and New Jersey.The airports will exchange best practices with their Chinese counterparts onenvironmental issues such as aircraft and vehicle emissions, terminal andairfield energy conservation, airport green construction projects, wastemanagement and water quality.
Under its National Civil Airport Development Plan, China plans to build 40 newairports by 2010 and 57 more by 2020. The AEP is designed the help the CAACaccomplish this steep growth with minimal environmental impact.
