The capital Beijing received 5.94 million visitors during the seven days, 3.5% up from last year. Tourism income hit 4.13 billion yuan (US$550.37 million), according to the municipal vacation office, Xinhua said.
The Forbidden Palace, the Summer Palace, and the Tiananmen Square were major draws for tourists. An interesting environmental fact was also disclosed - visitors to Tiananmen Square left 80 tonnes of garbage, a third of the amount left by tourists last year.
Tibet also saw higher numbers, especially with the opening of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. This year it brought just over 400,000 tourists to Tibet, about 50% more than last year.
“We are glad to see the notable increase in both tourist numbers and tourism revenue, but what makes us happier is that we saw no accidents in the past week,” a tourism official was quoted saying.
In Shanghai, the Golden Week saw visitors spend more than 3.3 billion yuan, as the city received 4.62 million visitors. This was 15% more compared to the same period last year.
