China’s Ministry of Railways has sacked its spokesperson, state news agency Xinhua has reported. Wang Yongping was thrust into the limelight last month following the fatal crash of two high-speed trains in eastern China. He was made famous by issuing an humble apology and bowing at a news conference after the crash, but was accused of being “too emotional” by officials, and came under fire from the public, who believed he dodged questions about the rescue operation – specifically the decision to bury wrecked carriages at the crash site.
Wang had served as the ministry’s spokesperson since 2003.
