China’s eastern city of Nanjing will hand out CNY20 million (US$2.9 million) in travel vouchers to stimulate domestic consumption, a Reuters report said quoting state radio.
At a time when China has made boosting growth a priority, the capital city of Jiangsu province will give out CNY100 vouchers that can be spent in rural areas to 200,000 urban families selected via a lottery.
The special give-away is intended to encourage them to travel to the countryside and is expected to stimulate total spending of CNY500 million, the report said. The move followed similar steps by other cities such as Chengdu and Hangzhou, which offered their residents shopping vouchers as part of efforts to boost domestic demand.
In Hangzhou, the city government handed out CNY100 million in “dated consumer vouchers” last month to city residents, DNA reported.
These vouchers, each of which have a face value of CNY20 and expire by 30 April, can be used at local supermarkets and provisions stores. Additionally, civil servants in the city will receive up to 10% of their salary as consumer vouchers.
Similarly, in Chengdu, in Sichuan province, the city government gave away shopping vouchers amounting to CNY37.9 million to low-income households.
