Britain’s travel network is set to be jammed today by record numbers of people making journeys to see family and relatives for Christmas Day. Following a week of snow and ice enforced air, road and rail delays, airport operators and main line carriers are expected to be working at full tilt to clear the back-log. As the focal point for the majority of the snow upheaval, Heathrow is expecting to operate almost a full schedule as the airport returns to normal. “Heathrow is open and most flights will operate today,” said a spokesperson for the airport. “Please do not travel to the airport unless your airline has confirmed you will be able to fly. We are extremely sorry for the disruption to your journey as we work to return to a normal schedule.” Flights at Gatwick and London City are also anticipated to be “back to normal” after days of delays and cancellations. Meanwhile, treacherous driving conditions will prove a test for millions of motorists across the country as sub-zero temperatures and further snow fall is expected.
