City Seasons Hotel Muscat will help ease capacity issues in a city that is currently running at 100% occupancy.”The city is full and thisproperty fills a gap in the market for a larger property because at 270 rooms, the only hotel larger in Muscat is the Shangri-La,” explained City Seasons Hotel Group Managing Director Thomas Tapken.”Most other properties have an inventory of around 100 to 150, plus we are situated in the diplomatic area of Muscat and that’s one of our USPs - location, location, location.”Tapken said the hotel, which opens its doors on 1 January would attract corporate and government business during the week and leisure groups over the weekend. The five-star deluxe property is also located next to a shopping mall and is just 15 minutes by car from Seeb International Airport.”We also have seven meeting rooms,” said Tapken. He said DMCs were already driving business to City Seasons Hotel Muscat as they were short on inventory to offer their clients.Key source markets, he added, were Korea, Japan, France, Belgium and the UK.Tapken did, however, acknowledge that work would need to be done to fill rooms during the summer. He called on Oman Air and Oman’s Ministry of Tourism to come up with a decent strategy to drive traffic to Muscat during the off-peak season.”Dubai has done it successfully with its kids go free initiative,” said Tapken.”Instead of just dropping rates, why can’t Oman do something like that?”
