Cityjet sees passenger increase

CityJet, London’s business airline, has defied the recession and realised strong passenger growth in the last quarter of 2009 from it’s hub at London City Airport. Routes to destinations such as Antwerp and Luxemburg showed as much as a 10% increase in December alone. Domestic routes such as Edinburgh and Dundee also saw a last minute surge which boosted overall passenger figures on Scottish routes by 23% compared to the previous year. CityJet, which carries up to 2 million passengers a year, carried just under 250,000 passengers from London City Airport to Amsterdam in 2009 making it the strongest route across its network. A further 149,500 passengers travelled to Dublin, 109,000 passengers travelled to Rotterdam and 72,000 travelled on the Antwerp route. To cope with the increase in passenger figures, CityJet is increasing capacity on some of its key routes - Amsterdam, Dublin, Edinburgh and Paris (Orly) will all benefit from increased frequencies during the 2010 winter schedule, taking CityJet’s flight tally from London City Airport to 60 per day across it’s network. Geoffrey O’Byrne White, CityJet CEO says ‘This is a remarkable turn around considering figures taken from the first 9 months of 2009 when the full force of the economic downturn hit the business travel industry. CityJet is set to go from strength to strength in 2010 following the successful launch of its Milan Linate route which is already showing a strong uptake. ‘We attribute the strength of our London City routes to the intensive marketing campaign promoting the efficiency of flying into and out of the heart of London.
