In a country where millions live in poverty, the government has found it necessary to form a committee to check on food wastage across the country. The committee, under the auspices of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, is to look at ways and means to check food wastage. It has been estimated that about 15 to 20% of food is just wasted in India at social gatherings such as marriages, parties and meetings. The committee will suggest awareness programme/public campaigns to curb food wastage and explore various options for introducing legislative and administrative measures in due course. It added that the committee would also examine how the Government and public sector could set an example by practicing austerity.
