British Airways has moved to reassure staff and customer that cost-cutting measures will enable it to become as a more confident international airline, when the world finally emerges from the current economic downturn.
In a message to the airline’s staff around the world, Chief Executive Willie Walsh said that BA had in place a ‘Business Response Scheme’ to combat the effects for the downturn, which included the much-publicised request for airline staff to take unpaid leave, or even work for free, for up to a month. Walsh himself has already committed to forego one month’s salary.
Walsh said that BA was continuing to invest in quality products and services, while
driving out unnecessary structural costs and taking some short term cost-cutting measures including the voluntary salary scheme, reducing capacity and parking aircraft.
“This isn’t a gimmick,” said Walsh. “We’re working hard to reshape our business to make it fit for the future. We have made it clear that the employee cost-saving initiatives at BA are all voluntary, and we’re pleased with the response we’ve had more than 3,000 have already signed up. This highlights that many of our staff are willing to help the company through these difficult times.”
