With an industry record 1.2 million cruise passengers in 2008, more ships under construction or on order than any other company in the world and over 250 destinations, Costa Cruises continues to expand despite the global downturn.
Costa Cruises has now set its sights on reaching 1.5 million guests in 2010. The Italian operator reported that it has continued to record encouraging performances in the first months of 2009.
Costa Cruises has more new ships on order or under construction than any other operator, five in total, scheduled for delivery by 2012 and entailing a total investment of EUR2.4 billion (US$3.0 billion). Three of these will be launched over the next 12 months: the Costa Luminosa (April 2009), Costa Pacifica (May 2009) and Costa Deliziosa (January 2010, pictured under construction). The Costa Luminosa and Costa Pacifica will be named together at a joint christening ceremony scheduled for 5 June 2009 in Genoa.
In overall terms, Costa Cruises will be increasing its capacity in 2010 by 16% compared to this year, with approximately 250 destinations and over 100 different itineraries. The new 2010 brochure features exclusive destinations such as Dubai, the Far East and the Indian Ocean, as well as new itineraries like summer cruises to Greenland plus special eco-tourism and food & wine excursions.
