Costa Cruises has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to help develop the cruise port of Trieste.
The cruise line’s CEO Michael Thamm signed the MoU with Debora Serracchiani, president of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region on Friday to develop the port as an embarkation point with improved rail links and public transport to and from the city.
The pair will also promote the Italian city as a cruise destination particularly for cruises heading to Eastern Europe, while Costa itself has already included the port as a regular call in 2015. Its new ship Costa Diadema will also have its first preview cruise from Trieste when it launches in November this year, while Costa Mediterranea will sail from the port from April 2015.
“Trieste is a strategic port for Costa and provides the ideal opportunity to visit both the region and nearby Venice. We are working very productively with the Autonomous Region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and with the local institutions for the development of cruising in this splendid city. The memorandum of understanding we have signed today is an important step forward in this direction,” said Michael Thamm.
President of the Autonomous Region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia Debora Serracchiani said: “This agreement confirms our commitment to facilitating Costa Cruises in its expansion in Trieste, which we consider to be strategic for the promotion of tourism throughout our region. In particular, the port calls planned here for Costa Cruises’ ships will put the spotlight on Trieste and Friuli-Venezia Giulia as places full of tourist attractions for visitors coming here from Eastern European countries. We have decided to set up a taskforce jointly with Costa in order to boost rail transport links and conduct a feasibility study for a hydrofoil service.”
Costa has already developed a relationship with Trenitalia to offer ‘Rail&Cruise’ holidays that connect Turin to Trieste with stops along the way.
