Singapore Airlines has reported a fall in the number of passengers - its first in three years, reflecting the weakening global economy. It carried 1,514,000 passengers last month, down 1.6% from last September’s 1,539,000 passengers.
The passenger load factor fell 4.1 percentage points to 76.9% while capacity grew by 6.8% with the delivery of new aircraft.
SIA said all route regions recorded declines in passenger load factor mainly due to the new capacity not being met by the increase in passenger traffic.
“Softening in demand resulting from the weak economy contributed to the lower PLFs (passenger load factor),” said SIA.
Travel in East Asia was affected by the Thai unrest and China’s visa restrictions during the Olympics. The curbs have been lifted in most cases since mid-September. Last month’s Ramadan led to drop in travel in West Asia and Africa.
