Crowne Plaza Christchurch will not reopen
The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Christchurch will have to be demolished after damaged sustained in the February earthquake. The hotel owner, Eureka Funds Management, confirmed the news yesterday, informing The Press that the hotel will not be rebuilt due to rising construction costs resulting from changes to the Christchurch building codes.
The company is now working with InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) to redeploy the 160 staff who have remained on full pay since the earthquake struck on 22 February. They now have the chance to work at other IHG hotels in New Zealand, Australia or further afield.
All three IHG properties in Christchurch – the Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn City Centre and Holiday Inn on Avon – sustained critical damage in the shock. The group is determined to maintain a presence in the city, but IHG Australasia Chief Operating Officer, Bruce McKenzie said the future is still uncertain. McKenzie said; “We’re working closely with the City of Christchurch, our partners and the industry to determine that future, with every intention of remaining a part of this city.”
