DFDS Seaways has recorded a 15% increase in UK bookings since April’s ash cloud chaos. Figures released by the ferry line show that sales are up on its Newcastle-Holland and Harwich-Denmark routes. “Since the volcanic ash cloud in April we have seen a significant increase in bookings, particularly in the number of people taking their vehicles for a summer holiday in Europe,” said DFDS UK Managing Director John Crummie. He said that ferry travel was particularly popular with families. “We are already seeing an increasing trend for family bookings in October half term, with bookings over 20% higher than the same period last year,” he explained. At the height of the airspace closures, DFDS saw a 200% increase in calls, a 311% rise in website visitors and bookings increased by 213%. It now expects a further surge if BAA’s strikes go ahead.
