As part of a pilot programme at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has begun collecting biometrics in the form of digital fingerprints from non-US citizens leaving the USA.
DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said, “Collecting biometrics allows us to determine faster and more accurately whether non-US citizens have departed the USA on time or remained in the country illegally. The pilot programmes in Atlanta and Detroit will help us determine and develop standard procedures for use at airports across the country to expedite legitimate travel and enhance our nation’s security.”
US-VISIT plans to begin implementing new biometric exit procedures based on these tests for non-US citizens leaving the USA by air within the next year
