The Mahaparinirvan Special covers prominent Buddhist pilgrim centres in India and Nepa and ends with a visit to the Taj Mahal in Agra. The train starts from the Safdarjung Railway Station in New Delhi and heads to Bodh Gaya (where the Buddha attained enlightenment), Nalanda, Rajgir, Varanasi, Shravasti and Lumbini (in Nepal, the birthplace of Buddha) during the week-long journey.
Arun Srivastava, Deputy General Manager (Tourism Marketing) of IRCTC said he expects tourists from Singapore as well as other Southeast Asian countries to join the circuit.
Earlier this year, several Singapore agents had gone on a familiarisation trip. The package costs US$180 for the deluxe air-conditioned coach on a twin sharing basis.
It’s almost full board, with accommodation at three-star hotels, sightseeing, food, road travel, entry fees to sites and insurance. ITCTC will also assist in getting visas.
For the second tier coaches, the rates are US$105 and US$88 for the third tier.
These are applicable for travel from October 2007-March 2008.
Srivastava also offered agents an enticing offer - one passenger travels free for every five booked (up to 15). For 20 passengers booked, five additional passengers travel for free.
