Deputy Human Resources Minister Abdul Rahman Bakar was quoted telling the Malaysian Parliament VoAs denied locals job opportunities.
Introduced in September 2006 in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2007, the VoA policy allows foreigners to stay in the country for a month. Over 89,000 had been approved up till August this year, a Bernama report said.
“So they come in droves as tourists but they eventually end up working here,” he was quoted saying.
“It’s high time for us to put a stop (to VoA).”
“Ironically, many tourists who were granted such visas don’t want to return to their country. There are about 40,000 foreign tourists on VoA who have refused to go home,” Bernama reported him a saying.
According to him, 17,965 Pakistanis were granted VoA so far this year, followed by Indians (14,642), Bangladeshis (11,156), Chinese (7,221) and Sri Lankans (6,221).
