Dubai Ruler approves ‘Route 2020’ metro project

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has approved awarding the contract of ‘Route 2020’ project, for extending the Red Line of the Dubai Metro.
Expolink Consortium, comprising French, Spanish and Turkish firms, has won the bid for the work – a contract valued at around AED10.6 billion (US$2.9 billion).
Sheikh Mohammed has asked that work start immediately on the construction of the Dubai Metro Red Line Extension project, with a launch date set at 20 May, 2020.
The new extension will serve visitors and workers travelling World Expo 2020 in the Dubai South District.
The event, which will run from October 2020 to April 2021, is expected to attract about 25 million visitors. The project will also serve the needs of demographic growth in the localities surrounding the metro track.
French company Alstom will supply 50 trains, 15 of which will serve the Expo route with the remaining 35 upgrading current Dubai Metro services.
