“The project will create life in the desert,” Saeed Ahmed Saeed, chief executive of developers Limitless, was quoted saying.
Along the way, public leisure facilities and mixed-use developments will sprout up along its banks.
Work on the canal project is to start in December for a three-year construction period.
The channel will be 150 metres wide and six metres deep, enough to accommodate yachts up to 40 metres long, said the company, a subsidiary of the state-owned Dubai World. The Arabian Canal will give rise to some truly unbelievable developments even by Dubai property standards. The delta forms the base from which Dubai Waterfront will extend several kilometers out into the sea, far beyond Palm Jebel Ali.
The Palm Jebel Ali will form about a fifth of the massive reclaimed component of the project.
The canal joins a growing list of Dubai’s architectural extravagances such as the Burj Dubai tower. The booming emirate has a creek which has traditionally hosted dozens of wharfs in the city, historically a trading centre.
