Adding to the ever-growing list of travel geniuses who apparently wouldn’t know an atlas if you hit them with it, a Dutchman and his grandson were left confused with their long-awaited flight to Sydney, Australia, landed in a much chillier Sydney – in Nova Scotia, Canada.
According to a Reuters report, Joannes and Nick Rutten set out from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport with Air Canada (the alarm bell, one would think) on Saturday. But instead of arriving to views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House, they touched down in Cape Breton Island, off Canada’s north east coast – more than 17,000km from their intended destination.
They are not the first to be caught out. In August 2002, two equally savvy British tourists spent their holiday in Nova Scotia after thinking they were flying to Australia. And only last year a woman from Argentina flew into the wrong Sydney for her vacation but decided to stay.
