eBay is to fill what is sees as a distribution gap for hotels by providing more direct hotel bookings. In an agreement with Cultuzz Digital Media and RateTiger, the website is said to be focusing on hotels sales as it has been sidelined by online travel agents. eRevMax, which operates RateTiger, said the move had come from the hotel sector’s necessity to generate more online sales. “Hoteliers need to take advantage of both traditional online sales channels as well as exploring new opportunities to secure bookings and generate more revenue,” said Sascha Hausmann, CEO, eRevMax. It is also thought that the channel will help drive bookings during traditionally quieter periods, plus enable hotels to avoid charges when holiday plans are disrupted. “Selling rooms on eBay offers hotels access to a unique customer base and enables hoteliers to steer guests towards low seasons and periods of low occupancy,” said Dr Reinhard Vogel, founder and CEO of Cultuzz. “And, the beauty of it all, bookings on eBay are prepaid and non-refundable”.
