An elephant calf at the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary nearKolkata has been killed in an accident with a train, the Times of India hasreported. The incident reportedly happened at 3am of Tuesday, when the 7 month oldpachyderm strayed on to tracks and was struck by the Guwahati-Jhaja Express.The incident is the seventh such accident on a stretch of track that cutsthrough the elephants’ territory. Environmentalists have campaigned vigorouslyto divert the route, but without success.
