Emirates has revealed that it will deploy its Airbus A380 aircraft to Washington DC from the start of next month.
Commencing on 1 February 2016, the airline will upgrade its daily service to the US capital from a Boeing 777-300ER to an A380. Emirates said it had taken the decision following United Airlines’ announcement that it would withdraw from the route on 25 January.
“The A380 will serve the strong customer demand and restore route capacity,” the Dubai-based carrier said in a statement.
The timings of the route will remain unchanged, with flights departing Dubai every day at 0220 and arriving in Washington DC at 0815. The return services then leave at 1015 and arrive back in Dubai at 0800 the next day.
The A380 Emirates will operate on the Washington DC route will feature all three of the airline’s cabin classes, and first and business class passengers will be offered chauffeured transfers to and from the airport.
“Our service to Washington DC has been one of our most successful and profitable routes, with high demand across all cabin classes,” said Sir Tim Clark, president of Emirates Airline. “Despite strong seat load factors, United has made the decision to withdraw from the route. The additional seats offered by our A380 will therefore restore capacity on the route, and ensure that American consumers and international travellers wishing to visit DC for business or leisure will continue to be served.”
Emirates currently operates flights to 10 US destinations: Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York JFK, Orlando, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington DC. And just last week, the airline unveiled plans to launch a second daily flight to LA, which will commence in July.
